Installations > Foam Iteration II

08-12/12 - Iteration
2012

Created while in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts.

This site-responsive artwork used the upholstery foam from a previous Iteration work to slowly engage the unique context and environment afforded by an artist residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts, in Sausalito, California. The slabs of foam were meditatively moved around the space and propped agains the rows of columns in response to the shifting light and weather conditions. Their slow motion through space over a number of months traced a dance-like progression that formed a contemplative journey through sun and shade, which marked both time and the slabs of foam themselves. As in the preceding Iteration piece, the works complete shape encompassed not only the suite of temporary compositions, but also the performative actions that shifted one structure into another. The slabs of foam acted as both props and sculptural components; the created structures existed as both remnants and results. This transience created diffuse, subjective meanings that persist only through memory.
