KIRK STOLLER

Connection and support are consistent themes in my work. I create found object sculptures that quite often need a wall or other support to stabilize them. Possessing a presence both on the wall and the floor, these forms bridge the space between two and three-dimensional presence. I use pieces of things, whose original state is unrecognizable. I reassemble these singular parts into stacked resonant forms. I build relationships between a cast of items based on formal issues such as shape, color, and pattern, but equally take into account the marks of past actions such as a cut, or a brush stroke, and the embedded histories these traces indicate. Forming unitary identities from isolated parts embodies a constructive process operating within the slippery terrain of fragmentary construction. This multivalent dynamic is at work not only in the the world around us, but also within ourselves.
