Project 7 was an artist project series that I hosted in my Berkeley studio (number 7) from 2007 to 2009. It attempted to bring the flux of artistic practice into discursive visibility by presenting projects that bridged the fluidity of the studio and the stasis of the gallery. I invited artists to create projects in which their process would be as important as anything they produced. The goal was to present work that questioned the distinction between artworks and the ongoing actions that produce them--to erase the division between art products and art labor.

At the end of 2009, project 7 closed when I moved back to San Francisco. Without a space the project's mission has evolved. Project 7 now works with artists to curate virtual retrospectives of their work. Modeled on the project with Kjell Varvin, these exhibitions--accompanied by contextual interviews and critical writing--resemble online artist monographs. I like to think of the projects as virtual catalogs for mid-career surveys that never happened.

stay tuned for the launch of project 7's new site in 2011.
